EDA Annual Convention 2022 in Paris

Last week, the Annual Convention of EDA/EDI was held in Paris (9 – 11 June 2022). During this very successful edition, many presentations (see the attached program) and discussions were held on four important topics: exemplary demolition jobs, the right demolition/recycling tools, hazardous substances and, last but not least, circular economy.

A fantastic gala dinner closed the EDA Annual Convention, and we celebrated the handover of the presidency from Francisco Cobo to Stefano Panseri as the new EDA-president. Patrick Frye became the next vice-president of the EDA.

Recycling Assistance BV, EDA member, was especially involved in the discussions on circular economy and hazardous substances. Some important highlights on these topics:

Demolition is still too often considered as something bad, just to destroy buildings. This is not true at all. Demolition is the only industry that can decontaminate hazardous substances, recycle space and adapt the existing buildings to meet the future requirements. By doing this, the demolition and recycling industry proved to be a reliable and capable partner in the circular construction industry. However, circularity doesn’t stop after recycling. Materials from demolition jobs have to be reused in the construction of new buildings and infrastructure in the most sustainable way. There are already many examples and techniques showing us that a circular construction industry is not an impossible dream.

But!

At the moment, only 10% of the volume of construction materials used in new projects is being replaced by (recycled) C&D waste. This means that even when all the C&D waste is recycled/reused, today, we still need 90% virgin materials to meet the demand in the construction industry. So, in this situation, it is very difficult to speak about a circular industry.

But!

Due to legislation, we see that in some regions the rise in the total building volume is flattening. Here we will hopefully arrive at the situation in which the available volume of C&D waste will meet the required volume of building materials. And it is for this situation that we have to be prepared with the circular construction industry. Circular economy is not aimed for greenwashing, it is essential if we want to continue our job!

Ms. Fulvia Raffaelli, European Commission – DG GROW, fully supports EDA and the members in their efforts on circular economy. Her presentation made very clear that the European Commission and EDA are sharing the same vision on our industry.

“BEWUSTZIJN ROND ASBEST WORDT STEEDS GROTER”

4Best, asbestverwijderaar uit Poederlee, en voormalig lid van Demolition & Recycling Consultants, won afgelopen maart de Thor Award voor Initiator van het jaar, de prijs voor een jong, veelbelovend bouwbedrijf. De nu 27-jarige Niels Laenen startte het bedrijf twee jaar geleden. Intussen heeft 4Best twaalf medewerkers, boekt het mooie financiële resultaten en is het een bekende naam in de asbestwereld. Recycling Assistance gaat Handheld XRF Analyzer gebruiken

In het kader van het WOOL2LOOP-project omtrent recyclage van minerale wol, heeft Recycling Assistance nu een “Handheld XRF Analyzer” ter beschikking (Vanta VCA van Olympus). Met dit toestel is snelle, on-site, non-destructieve chemische element analyse mogelijk tot op ppm-niveau. Naast de karakterisering van minerale wol in sloopprojecten zal de XRF analyzer gebruikt kunnen worden voor o.a. het identificeren van loodhoudende verf, het in kaart brengen van bodemverontreinigingen zoals zinkassen en het identificeren van schroot voor recyclage.

Circulair bouwen: Bouwafval wordt op nooit geziene schaal hergebruikt bij de renovatie van WTC-torens in Brussel

Vanavond toonde het actuamagazine Terzake een reportage i.v.m. de circulaire economie en hergebruik van bouw- en sloopafval. De renovatie van de WTC-torens in Brussel is hier een mooi voorbeeld van. Ook Recycling Assistance probeert zijn steentje bij te dragen tot het circulair maken van de bouwsector, onder meer via het Europese WOOL2LOOP-project, waarin de recyclage van mineraal isolatiemateriaal wordt onderzocht. In het kader van dit project voerde Recycling Assistance verschillende staalnames uit in België, onder meer ook in dezelfde WTC-torens getoond in de reportage.

Recycling Assistance gaat grotere rol spelen binnen WOOL2LOOP

WOOL2LOOP is het Europees project dat de recyclage van mineraal isolatiemateriaal (glas- en steenwol) onderzoekt. Sinds de start van het project vorig jaar werkt Recycling Assistance mee door expertise te delen i.v.m. het opstellen van sloopinventarissen en regelgeving rond afbraakwerken. Ook werden staalnames en karakteriseringen van partijen minerale wol uitgevoerd op verschillende afbraakwerven in België.

Na het terugtrekken van één van de partners uit het project, zal Recycling Assistance nu verschillende taken overnemen en een grotere rol gaan spelen binnen WOOL2LOOP. Zo wordt Recycling Assistance bijvoorbeel verantwoordelijk voor het afleveren van het (intern) eindrapport dat de richtlijnen voor de collectie en voorbehandeling van minerale wol afkomstig van afbraakwerven zal beschrijven.
